Back in corporate land with Barclaycard Bespoke

Since March this year, I’ve been working on a project for Barclaycard, writing offers for Barclaycard Bespoke. Bespoke is a targeted offers site, offering vouchers and discounts on products you’re probably going to want. And they know this because they hold tons of data about what people buy. While it was great to get involved in a big project (and it’s always nice to get out of my spare room and meet new people occasionally), it was interesting to see the chaos that ensued as a couple of launch dates came and went. Clearly,...

Website copy for The Design Büro

Writing the copy for The Design Büro’s new website was fascinating stuff. They don’t just design buildings for the healthcare sector, they use evidence-based research to find new models of care and then create buildings and environments that effectively deliver that care. Space planning and interior design are all vital elements in creating the most effective healthcare environments – and results are measured to ensure that their solutions achieve the best clinical outcome possible. They are a talented, enthusiastic bunch of...

Writer’s block? Maybe you just need a starting point…

Writer’s block? Maybe you just need a starting point…

As much as anyone, I know how hard it is to write copy for yourself. I agonised over writing the copy for my own site – it took me weeks and weeks of tweaking, editing, deleting, re-writing – and often walking away in frustration. A brave (or stupid) admission for a copywriter, eh? I knew how I wanted to present myself – I obviously wanted to reflect my personality (sometimes outrageous, often cheeky and always irreverent) but I also needed to show that I was professional, reliable, fast, efficient and affordable. I hope I...

More grammar please, not less!

More grammar please, not less!

It’s my biggest bugbear – the constant mix-up of ‘less’ and ‘fewer’. The two are NOT interchangeable! It’s very easy. If you can count things individually, then it’s ‘fewer’. If you can’t, it’s ‘less’. So you’d say ‘less water’, ‘less flour’, ‘less liquid’ because these things aren’t quantifiable individually. But you’d say ‘fewer dogs’, ‘fewer coins’ and ‘fewer peanuts’. The joy of invoicing your accountant

The joy of invoicing your accountant

I can’t actually say anything bad about my accountant. He’s helped me and my family with some complex tax issues and is always on hand to answer questions. That said, it’s always nice to be able to invoice your accountant rather than vice versa. Varney Barfield wanted to update their website (I wrote the first site for them years ago!) and asked me to write the copy again for them. They have a particular expertise in specialist areas, such as Research & Development Tax Relief and the Patent Box – but although they...

Holiday home descriptions

Holiday home descriptions

The Pet Friendly Cottage Company is exactly that – a website featuring pet-friendly places to stay across England, Scotland and Wales. I regularly write holiday home descriptions for the site, to a prescribed format and in language designed to appeal to people looking for particular types of holiday. This is the latest project for this particular client – I’ve also written descriptions for Lodges with Hot Tubs and Jolly Hols. I usually receive them in batches of 10 or 20 and take the information I need from a number of...

Dore programme – case studies

Dore programme – case studies

Dore is a unique and non-invasive learning programme of physical exercises for people who have learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD. It has helped thousands of people overcome their problems and transform their lives. I wrote a series of case studies for children who had embarked on – and successfully completed – the Dore programme. To get the information I needed, I interviewed their parents and it was often a very moving experience for them to talk, and for me to hear about, how far they had...
